A Midtown Recommendation: The Film "Avatar."

in

I could easily rail against Hollywood for its many blockbuster, cliché-filled films that are unworthy of consumption, but with "Avatar" I can't. The film, clichés intact, is delightful in so many ways: the cinematography, the special effects, the prevailing message, and the sleek, tribal, catlike creatures will captivate and draw you into a fantastical adventure.

The society of cats exemplifies many a tribal communities from our Native American Indian to Britain's Chagoans, an indigenous tribe who were booted off their Island of paradise Diego Garcia to make way for a military base. But I digress...

Avatar's tribal community seems far more interesting than our tribal community; spiritually connecting with all things living, rather than hustling day to day in isolated pursuits in our concrete jungle. The message is clear: All living things should be valued. The ones who can't comprehend this want to see everyone wearing sneakers and jeans and carrying cell phones.

Avatar resonates loudly, strengthening the notion that art imitates life.

It will be hard to miss "Avatar," it's still playing in all the major theaters.
